Service Overview
A leaking wheel seal throws gear oil onto brake shoes and starves the bearings — two expensive failures racing each other. On commercial axles this is an out-of-service item.
The job involves hub removal, seal and gasket replacement, bearing inspection and repack/re-oil per design, proper bearing adjustment with dial-indicator verification, and torque to spec.
Signs You Need This Service
- Oil slung on the inside of a wheel or tire
- Wet, glazed brake shoes on one wheel
- Hub oil level low (oil-bath hubs)
- DOT write-up for a wet wheel-end
Consequences of Ignoring It
- Brake failure on the contaminated wheel
- Bearing burn-up — potentially losing the wheel-end entirely
- Out-of-service order parking the truck where it stands
Recommended Service Interval
Inspect at every brake job and PM; replace at the first sign of weeping.
